HOSPITAL SYSTEMS, universities and major retail chains are the biggest employers in the United States, a analysis shows, but one big box store is at the top of the list.
Walmart is the nation’s leading employer, when excluding the government, and is the top employer in 22 states, according to a 24/7 Wall Street study. The analysis looked at nonprofits and publicly and privately-held companies. The study also included some government employers, but only those where “states frequently identify and compare company headcounts,” such as public universities.
Most of the states where Walmart employs the largest share of residents fall in the Southwestern and Midwestern regions. In Arkansas, home to the company’s headquarters, Walmart has 52,000 employees. And Walmart’s nearly 600 retail locations and hundreds of superstores in Texas employ more than 168,000 people. Unlike other large retailers like Target and Kohl’s, Walmart doesn’t hire extra workers to keep up with holiday shoppers. Instead, the company offers its 1.5 million U.S.-based employees more hours.
Besides Walmart, hospital systems and university systems tend to be the largest state employers. New York, which has a state university system including 64 campuses, is one of 10 states where public universities employ the most people.
In 14 states, employment is dominated by the health care sector. For example, Massachusetts’ Partners Healthcare network employs 68,000 people, according to 24/7 Wall Street.
